Though we tend to think of hummingbirds as cute, dainty little things, in reality they make bold and fierce competitors.
They don't let their guard down for a moment while defending their territories from other hummingbirds. They must also watch out for other animals that might prey on them, such as American kestrels in North America or tarantulas in South America. Praying mantises are also known to capture and kill hummingbirds.
WHAT?
GET OUT!! I don't know which pictures are cooler - these or the eagle catching the fox.
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable! No wonder I feel like feeding all the Hummingbirds! And all this time, I thought of the Praying Mantises as an extremely helpful pest control agents, entirely welcome in my back yard. I guess that hasn't changed, but I wish they would stick to insects........ I can attest to the fact that ounce for ounce, the Hummingbird is about the most aggessive of any of our wild creatures.......but then it has to be doesn't it? DASWH
