What does MT mean in a tweet?

Technical Twitter abbreviations:
  • MT = Modified tweet. This means the tweet you're looking at is a paraphrase of a tweet originally written by someone else.
  • RT = Retweet. The tweet you're looking at was forwarded to you by another user.
  • DM = Direct message. A direct-message is a message only you and the person who sent it can read. IMPORTANT: To DM someone all you need to type is D username message.

Is this snowfall a record?

I've been seeing lots of people post about this early snowfall, and thought I would do a little homework.

Here are the historical snowfall amounts by month according to weatherbase.com's Bethlehem PA history

Looks like the average snowfall in October is:  Zero.

According to The Weather Channel:

Pre-Halloween snows are a rarity in the Northeast but they have occurred before. One of the earliest events on record occurred with a coastal storm on October 3-4, 1987, when close to 2 feet of snow fell in portions of the Catskills and Vermont’s Green Mountains. Residents of Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York and Boston saw one of their earliest snowfalls on October 10-11, 1979 when a small low pressure system and just enough cold air blanketed parts of the major metropolitan areas with a trace to a couple inches of snow.

Photoset: A Red-tailed Hawk eats a Chipmunk

During a visit to Hawk Mountain this weekend, we saw this spectacular site:

No Siri? It's ok - your iPhone already has voice commands!

I won't be upgrading to the iPhone 4S because I'm in a 2 year contract already - but that means missing out on all the cool features of the 4S, the biggest one being Siri.

Don't fret - you probably didn't even know that you already HAVE a voice control in your current iPhone.  It's simply called "Voice Control", and here's what it can do.

Use Voice Control: Press and hold the Home button until the Voice Control screen appears and you hear a beep. You can also press and hold the center button on the iPhone earphones.

Call someone in contacts Say “call” or “dial,” then say the name of the person. If the person has more than one phone number, you can add “home” or “mobile,” for example.

Make a FaceTime call to someone in contacts (iPhone 4) Say “FaceTime,” then say the name of the person. If the person has more than one phone number, you can add “home” or “mobile,” for example.

Dial a number Say “call” or “dial,” then say the number.

Control music playback Say “play” or “play music.” To pause, say “pause” or “pause music.” You can also say “next song” or “previous song.”

Play an album, artist, or playlist Say “play,” then say “album,” “artist,” or “playlist” and the name.

Shuffle the current playlist Say “shuffle.”

Find out more about the currently playing song Say “what’s playing,” “what song is this,” “who sings this song,” or “who is this song by.”

Use Genius to play similar songs Say “Genius,” “play more like this,” or “play more songs like this.”

Find out the current time Say “what time is it?” or “what is the time?”

Cancel Voice Control Say “cancel” or “stop.” You may enjoy reading a blog that I like - called Paul's iPad, he has great content and a topical article on Siri on the iPad2 here.

Morris Plains 9/11 Memorial

After an appointment today, I passed this 10th anniversary memorial and decided to stop for a few minutes to pay my respects.

It was a powerful feeling knowing that this steel beam stood at the exact impact zone where American Airlines Flight 11 struck Tower 1.

The probability of YOU existing

This article blew my mind. Warning: Math ahead.

"So what’s the probability of your existing? It’s the probability of 2 million people getting together – about the population of San Diego – each to play a game of dice with trillion-sided dice. They each roll the dice – and they all come up the exact same number – say, 550,343,279,001."

The 4 D's of Effective Management

If you ask most managers - they will tell you that being an effective manager today is significantly harder than even a few years ago.  Reasons range from the economy, attempting to do more with less, and the rise in technology - which has many distractions.

I read somewhere that email is "Someone else's to do list for me." I love that - and I always try to remember it when I browse my inbox while trying to get actual work done.  When navigating through email and the many tasks on my to do list - I've subscribed to the 4 D's:
        • Do it
        • Delegate it
        • Delay it
        • Dump it
Do it

Does it need to be done?  Does it need to be done now?  Why wait?  Do it.

Delegate it

Should I personally be tying myself up in this task or is there someone else who can do this?  I've stopped trying to control everything - and delegating completes the task and leaves me out of it. WIN!

Delay it

Many things seem urgent at first.  Delaying will not only give you time to see how important it is - it will allow you to focus on tasks which made it to the "Do it" list.  I've saved emails in the "Delay" folder, and read them weeks later and if I had taken action on them - I'd have wasted my time.

Dump it

I mentioned it above - the worst thing an effective manager can do is to try to control everything - so I stopped trying to.  This lead to me dumping lots of tasks I would normally involve myself in.

What else can you dump?  For a week, try to dump a few tasks you would normally do and see what cause and effect this has on your effectiveness.  You'll be surprised at how not doing things feels so liberating!

Got a tip on how you are more effective?  Please share it below.
